Elbstrand begins in the charming district of Övelgönne, which you can easily reach by ferry line 62 from Landungsbrücken. Even the journey across the water is an experience in itself. Upon arriving in Övelgönne, you will find the Museum Harbor with its historic ships that tell of Hamburg's maritime past.
A highlight at the beach is the boulder "Alter Schwede." This 217-ton stone was discovered during dredging work in the Elbe in 1999 and has since found its permanent place on the shore. With a circumference of nearly 20 meters, it is hard to miss and provides a great photo opportunity for your memories.
If you stroll further along the beach, you will reach the Hans-Leip-Ufer. This section is named after the poet of the world-famous song "Lili Marleen" and offers you a less-visited area where you can peacefully listen to the sound of the waves and let your gaze wander over the passing ships.
For refreshments, the legendary Strandperle provides a kiosk right by the water. Here, Hamburg locals and visitors meet to enjoy a cool drink while watching the sunset. A little further west, you'll reach Teufelsbrück. The name derives from an old legend that tells of a trick that outsmarted the devil. Today, you can discover the statue of a pondering Lucifer holding a rabbit in his hand, which reminds of this story.
For dog owners, the Falkensteiner Ufer offers a special area where four-legged friends can romp around off-leash. This section between Blankenese and Rissen is less frequented and provides plenty of space for extensive walks with your dog.
Insider Tip: If you want to escape the crowds, visit Elbstrand in the early morning hours. The sunrise over the Elbe bathes the scene in a magical light, and you will almost have the beach to yourself. |
Tip: Use the ferry line 62 from the Landungsbrücken to Övelgönne. With an HVV ticket, you can enjoy the ride without additional costs and simultaneously take a small harbor tour. |
